China may have found a powerful workaround to America’s AI chip restrictions.
Tencent has reportedly agreed to a $7 billion, five-year deal with Oracle for access to around 100,000 advanced AI chips through data centres in Southeast Asia. The chips would remain outside mainland China, but Tencent could still use their computing power to train and develop AI systems.
